The detection of otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) has proven to be a useful addition to the audiological test battery. Its applications include:
- Providing an objective diagnosis of hearing loss in infants referred from newborn hearing screening programs
- Monitoring cochlear damage caused by noise exposure or ototoxic medication
- Offering a differential diagnosis. The sensitivity of OAEs in measuring cochlear function is useful for distinguishing sensory from neural hearing loss.
The MADSEN Capella is currently the only device available which combines OAE measurement with middle-ear screening.
